Join Claire for that Ahh! moment

Yoga retreat at The Watermill in Tuscany, yoga and meditation retreats

Our lovely yoga and meditatation tutor Claire Murphy wants you to come and join her for her week-long retreat this September, enjoy lots and lots of ‘aah’ moments and put yourself completely at ease. Claire says: “Your comfort during the retreat is of paramount importance to all of us, so when I ask if something feels comfortable and the response is, ‘it’s fine’, then that’s not ok. I’m not looking for fine I’m looking for that ‘ahh’ moment.”

You’ll get plenty of help. Claire adds: “One of the many features of yoga with me is the number of props that are employed to convey a sense of support, comfort and above all else, ease. Last year, our guests at the Watermill were quite amazed at the bolsters, blankets, blocks provided, as well as physio balls and scarves that I brought with me too”.The Watermill at Posara for painting, knitting, yoga, cookery holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy. We still have two places on Claire’s wonderful yoga and meditation retreat, called Nourish — mind, body, soul, which will run from Saturday 9 September to Saturday 16 September, and we’d love you to join us. (There are links below to more details.)

A comment from one of our guests here with Claire last year: “I was extremely impressed by the beauty of the Watermill itself and of its location. The buildings are beautiful and comfortable and the location is green and luscious. The Watermill itself is surrounded by beautiful grounds and well tended gardens where you can sit or lounge and relax or go for peaceful walks and the only noises you hear are birds, water, and the occasional rutting deer! The yoga studio is airy and peaceful and the yoga tutor was all we could have hoped for. Also, great food and wine. And all, and I mean all, even a meal in a local restaurant and transfers to/from Pisa airport, is included in the price you pay, no hidden costs.”

We’ll nourish your soul on rural walks and visits to ancient walled towns and hilltop villages, castles and14432947_10154449229557557_403500150842892678_nconvents. You’ll also savour the relaxed atmosphere of la bella vita italiana in local cafes, shops, restaurants and markets. We’ll venture a little journal writing and painting in The Watermill studio overlooking the river or under the shade of the vine verandah to nourish your mind. And we’ll nourish your body with fresh, home-cooked, nutritionally balanced meals lovingly prepared by the Watermill cooks, with many of the ingredients freshly picked from The Watermill’s own gardens. There will be vegetarian options for every meal, of course. Private sessions with a local Shiatsu practitioner are also available, at cost, on request.

You’ll be painting Tuscan houses with Mark!

Painting by Mark Warner, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.I really like this picture of an English house in the country by our talented and inspirational painting tutor Mark Warner.  Subtle colours, vibrant brushstrokes.

You can come and learn more about Mark’s great techniques and capture the Tuscan ambiance with your brush on his course here this Summer. (There is a link to more details below.)

It looks a bit different round here! Here’s a view of the Watermill courtyard:Mill courtyardAnd typical scenery in the unspoilt Tuscan region of Lunigiana surrounding the mill:The Watermill at Posara for painting, knitting, yoga, holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.

Mark Warner is a specialist in acrylics/watercolours incorporating conte/pastel and his painting course here will run from Saturday 22 July to Saturday 29 July 2017. We have nine people booked on his course, so we have room for only two or three more painters.

Mark lives in Shropshire in England and is not only a respected artist but also a highly professional tutor with many years of teaching experience. Mark is passionate about working outside, tutoring numerous day and residential plein air holidays. His sessions are very popular — and he leads by example, creating a relaxed and encouraging environment.  He says I adore using colour while interpreting the light, weather and a love for the materials. I work directly in the field (literally on many occasions!) from sketches created outside as well as notes/photographs taken on location.”

Sketching is at the heart of Mark’s work: “This is important in the development of a piece and on many occasions, forming an integral part of the painting itself.” Mark works on coloured grounds, incorporating aspects of mark-making and directional brushstrokes within the work. He says: “I continue to draw inspiration from the landscape, although subject matter can be broad and at times very different.”

This is the sort of Tuscan view around the Watermill that will inspire him — and you!

Still a few places left Sue’s Tuscan Summer painting course

Watermill lost in the wonderful scenerySummer at the Watermill in Tuscany: The sun shines, the sky is as blue as only an Italian sky can be and a gentle breeze blows coolly down the valley of the river Rosaro beside the mill – and our talented and versatile painting tutor Sue Ford leads her painting group to fabulous locations.

Mill courtyardWe still have three or four places left and we’d love you to join us. Sue says: I just love creating pictures in any medium – and I love passing on what I’ve learned to other people and to help them release their creativity.”

During her painting holidays, Sue’s aim is to ensure that all her students benefit – regardless of their experience. She says: “The idea is to create a solid foundation of artistic techniques whilst developing their own style in a relaxed and comfortable learning environment.” Each day Sue guides, every student gently through each of the painting stages; often with an initial demonstration to get everyone started and to build confidence. These painting demonstrations are followed by patient, professional tuition throughout the holiday. Sue says: “All paintings created by each student will inspire them to move forward with confidence in their own artistic direction.”Sue Ford, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.

Don’t miss out: grab yourself a place!

A picture of the millstream taken by Lois last week.

Tim painted this Italian scene but wasn’t there…

… but he’ll be side by side with you at The Watermill and its glorious surrounding scenery.

Painting by Tim Wilmot, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy. The magnificent watercolour above is by our talented and inspiring English painting tutor Tim Wilmot. But he admits he wasn’t there: “Unfortunately I have not been to Lake Como for a Workshop.”

This was a painting done as a demonstration in a recent workshop in the UK.  Tim says:“I was presented with some sample photos to paint, and I chose this one because it suited my style and I thought it would make a great subject for watercolour, having those darks and lights.  Also, what I think worked okay was the cool sky, then coming down, the warm buildings and then the cool shadows – plenty of cobalt!”

Tim will be with you all the time when we go on location in the stunning scenery of Lunigiana that surrounds the mill and you’ll learn how to capture the environment with your brush.

And with Tim as your guide, you’ll learn now to loosen our style and capture the essence of the wonderful scenery with your brush, so come and discover the secrets of great watercolours from Tim. In the meantime, here’s another example of what Tim can achieve from a photograph:

Tim’s impression of the riverside by The Watermill

While he’s dabbled with portraits and still lifes over the years, Tim is inexorably drawn to landscapes. He says: “I’m an outdoor person rather than an indoor person. For many years I’ve taken a sketch book on my travels and I quickly scribble scenes in a shorthand sort of way. Then, returning home, I recreate those memories with paint and brush.” And you’ll be able to do that, too, in the Watermill studio, overlooking the river and the walled garden with the high Apennines beyond.

Every day we’ll paint outside as much as possible and Tim will try to do two demos during the day. He says: During the demos I’ll welcome questions, such as ‘Why did you choose that scene?’ ‘What brush are you using there?’ ‘What colour combination did you just use?’ and so on.” After the demonstration, everyone can have a go at replicating that scene. Tim says: “I will be on hand to look over your shoulder and give some words of encouragement and try to give advice on what, in my opinion, does work and what doesn’t. We can also have all our work displayed together and go through a brief critique and compare our experiences

At work in the studio

At work in the studio

If we’re in the studio, no problem. There will be opportunity create some watercolour landscapes from some reference photos and we can do exercises on figure work, and getting things like cars or boats into the landscape.

“We all want to take away many things from our time at the Watermill and then the key is to IMPLEMENT at least one thing you have learnt.”

Mark couldn’t hang around when painting this scene

Painting by Mark Warner, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy. Our inspiring and talented Watermill painting tutor Mark Warner recently sent us this charming painting of the Conwy Estuary, North Wales. He says “It was a lovely day, but I couldn’t hang around as the tide was coming in!”

Later Mark went back to the studio to work on what he had achieved during that day. You won’t have to worry about tides during Mark’s week-long painting holiday at The Watermill, just enjoy the bubbling waters of the river and the millstream and take your time in the glorious scenery surrounding the mill.

Curiosity inspires the artist, says Tom Byrne

Tom plien air bannerWatermill painting tutor Tom Byrne reckons that while curiosity may have killed the cat, it certainly enlivens the artist.  He says: “My inspiration comes from drawing, curiosity and communication.”

He adds: Painting is a constant evolutionary process. Nothing stands still and an artist always thinks in terms of exploration, insights and an almost scientific investigation into poetic expression. Exploration is the lens through which we see the world and art is a foundation stone of culture. It searches for it’s true north in each society.”

An oil of one of the hills surrounding Florence, by Tom Byrne

Tom specialises in plein air painting especially in the Tuscan countryside and that’s just what you’ll be doing (plus occasional studio work) when you join his for his course here in June.

Tom J Byrne is from Ireland, where he studied and worked as an artist for 20 years, but for the last 15 years he has been living between France and Italy. In his workshop Tom will demonstrate in both oils and watercolours.

A watercolour of a Florentine garden by Tom Byrne

Tom says: The simplicity of watercolours means they are a fantastic way quickly to grasp the principles involved in seeing and painting. Oils give us a very robust and powerful painting which is more easily appreciated by an audience.”

Here’s some praise from former students. One said: Tom Byrne is a charming host as well as a superb artist. He set up an easy and congenial atmosphere with fantastic food and plenty of wine. Tom is also an inspiring teacher. He’s serious and fun at the same time.” Another said: “Tom Byrne made the experience a special one by creating a friendly, collegial atmosphere among the guests with relaxed, interesting conversations over delicious Italian dinners. There was comprehensive tuition tailored to suit all levels of experience. I was amazed how much I actually painted while thoroughly enjoying myself.”
