With increasing confidence that we will, at last, be able to run our creative courses this summer, we-re going to be reintroducing you to our inspiring tutors. Today, may we present Vicki Norman, who is returning this summer for another of her vibrant painting weeks. Vicki will be with us for her course, in oils and watercolours (and other mediums), from Saturday 3 July to Saturday, 10 July 2021.

English painting tutor Vicki Norman specialises in painting on location. Her paintings seek to capture the essence of the day and the sense of place through the colour and play of the light. Vicki will teach primarily in oils and watercolours, but is happy to help with other mediums, too. She has been teaching professionally for more than 15 years and offers plenty of help and individual attention.

Here’s a comment from one of our guests on Vicki’s last course at the Watermill: “An excellent painting and holiday week. All the trips out to painting locations were well organised and Vicki was excellent as a teacher: Her wonderful paintings were an inspiration.”

Everything is included in the cost of your holiday at the watermill: tuition, accommodation, pre-dinner aperitifs, all meals and wines (including outings to charming local restaurants) and all local transportation (including transfers to Pisa airport and an excursion by train to Lucca or the Cinque Terre).

You get to Pisa, Italy, we do the rest!

And you will be Cool and Green: all our rooms are air-conditioned, powered by photovoltaic panels which make us self-sufficient in electricity.

Painting in a stunning Italian piazza on Day Five of our ‘virtual’ week

Painting by Mike Willdridge, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.

It was excursion day yesterday on our online, interactive ‘virtual’ week at the Watermill and we visited a flower market in the stunning piazza dell’anfiteatro in the beautiful walled Italian city of Lucca. That’s tutor Mike Willdridge’s demonstration picture of the scene above.

As usual, we have had plenty of kind comments about our week and I particularly like this one, which suggests a new career for Mike! One of our guests from across the pond wrote: “I wanted to let you know I am really enjoying your classes. You teach very well and have helped me to understand many different facets of making watercolors work for me. My sister even requested my last picture of the market for her birthday gift!

“My son hears your voice every day and says you should read books because you have a good voiceover for it.   He …and I — love your accent and your calming style. Thank you for everything.”

Once more, many of our guests sent their paintings to our online Gallery, and again, I’ve been able to choose only a few of them to display here. As ever, my apologies to those I had to leave out. It is not a sign of artistic merit: I chose the paintings at random.

And again, I’ve made one of those short, fun Facebook slideshows, so you can see the paintings a little larger. You can view them by clicking here.

After yesterday’s excitement, today we are off to a quiet monastery near the Watermill to enjoy a tranquil painting session. Mike has done a demonstration picture for today but rather just sent everyone a drawing to help them get started. Those curved vaults are not easy. Happy painting!

Join the party and paint a piazza!

The Watermill at Posara for painting, creative writing, knitting, and Italian language holidays/vacations/workshops, Tuscany, Italy.

More than 60 people have already signed up for Tim Wilmot’s unique online session next Tuesday, ready to paint along in a piazza! Why don’t you come and join the party?

The online painting sessions run by the Watermill and its renowned tutors continue to provide inspiration, relaxation and happy conversation. And we’ve an exciting new innovation for you next Tuesday: you choose which subjects you are going to paint.

This special Watermill online event will feature English watercolourist Tim Wilmot, already a popular tutor on our ‘real’ week-long painting holidays here. (Tim will be back with us in Posara this autumn, see below.) The special online event is on Tuesday 2 March, starting at 5 o’clock in the afternoon British time (6 o’clock in the afternoon European time; morning in the USA according to which time zone you are in. Please note that this is a bonus online session; our regular Thursday sessions will continue on Thursday 4 March.) You can register for Tim’s special online event on Tuesday 2 March by clicking here.

And yes, you get to choose which of the four Italian piazza views above that you’ll paint. They are all in the walled mediaeval town of Fivizzano, a mile or so also from the Watermill, which we visit during our ‘real’ weeks. At the beginning of the session Tim will outline the merits of painting each of the four photos above. Then you’ll vote on which one you prefer. We will choose the scene favoured by the majority and then you paint along, as usual in our sessions, with Tim.

Painting by Tim Wilmot, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.
Here’s one I prepared earlier! A Fivizzano piazza painted previously by Tim.

Don’t forget why our sessions are special: Unlike many online painting programmes, Tim’s will not expect you to ‘look over his shoulder’ for a long demonstration, and perhaps be allowed to ask the odd question or two. No, you will be painting along at more or less the same time, trying out the watercolour techniques that Tim shows you, step-by-step. Then, after you have had your turn, Tim will move onto the next part of the process. Lois Breckon from The Watermill at Posara will be on hand during the session to feed your questions. The session will last a couple of hours.

When you register for the session you will be asked for a donation. Some people ask how much this should be. Our answer? “Like the measure of a Scottish dram: it should offend neither the host nor the guest!” Our Zoom painting demonstrations do take quite a bit of time in preparation and administration and your support is very much appreciated. With your generosity we can plan and run further sessions and, more importantly, provide a regular meeting place for creativity, camaraderie and fun. We hope that you enjoy the international, online painting community that we have created.

When you register you will be provided with two links. The first is the Zoom link for you to join the session. The second link is where you will find the photographs that you will be asked to vote on, and a list of equipment and colours for your palette.

After the event, you are invited to email us with your painting to add to our gallery. In addition, we will send you a link to an edited video of the session that will enable to you revisit Tim’s step-by-step teaching.

To register for this event which is truly interactive as well as great fun, please click here.

When you’ve painted with Tim online, why not join him for real at the Watermill at Posara in Tuscany Italy this autumn? We would love to welcome you to the Watermill. You can find more details of Tim’s week-long course in watercolours, which runs from Saturday 2 October to Saturday 9 October 2021, by clicking here.

Painting by Tim Wilmot, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.

Tim Wilmot is an artist from Bristol in the South-west of the UK, specialising in vibrant watercolours, using tone and light to bring out the best in the medium. Tim, self-taught, paints in a loose, impressionistic style and, while having dabbled with portraits and still lifes, he is inexorably drawn to landscapes. He says: “I’m an outdoor person rather than an indoor person. For many years I’ve taken a sketch book on my travels and I quickly scribble scenes in a shorthand sort of way. Then, returning home, I recreate those memories with paint and brush. Watercolour is also an ideal medium for those quick impressions when you’re limited in time.”

What about Tim’s style? He says: “I have been influenced by the styles of so many great watercolour artists, such as John Pike, Edward Wesson, John Yardley, Alvaro Castagnet and Joseph Zbukvic, but I have developed my own style over the years. When I look at other artists your aim is not to copy their style but to take elements of how they go about things and ‘make it your own’. So, use methods and techniques that you are comfortable with to deploy and use: there’s no sense using masking fluid if you never get on with the stuff!”

I I’ve made a little Facebook slideshow of some of Tim’s wonderful watercolour painting in and around the Watermill on previous visits. You can see it by clicking here.

A vibrant watercolour of an old vineyard by Tim Wilmot.

As well as an exciting artist, Tim is also an inspiring teacher. He demonstrates regularly in England and, has more than 15,000 followers of his demonstrations on YouTube. He is also a popular online painting tutor. He loves personal interaction with his students: “Every artist loves a bit or critique and feedback, and that’s one of the key things I get out of a demo to a group of people. Everyone has something to say about a piece of work and that feedback is critical to development. “Tim adds: “There are all sorts of reasons for coming on a painting holiday — it might be to improve your drawing skills, loosen up your style, learn how to incorporate figures in a landscape — and it’s my job to try to find what your personal objectives are and help you achieve them. Oh and have fun with like-minded people on the way.”

You can find out more about Tim on his website.

You will shine both virtually and for real on Rebecca’s pastel courses

Painting by Rebecca de Mendonça, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.

Bookings are flowing in for Rebecca de Mendonça’s online pastel session next week, in which she will show you how to capture shine and reflected colour in your paintings. We would love you to join us and, when you have enjoyed learning the art of pastel painting online with Rebecca, why not come and shine on her inspiring week-long pastel course at the Watermill later this year? Now that we are emerging back to normality, it’s time to plan to give yourself a creative treat! (That is one of Rebecca’s stunning pastels above: Come and capture Tuscan sunshine and shadows.)

Rebecca’s online session is next Thursday, 4 March, at 2:30 in the afternoon British time (3: 30 in the afternoon Italian time; in the morning in the USA and Canada, precise time depending on which zone you are in.) It will be full of tips and techniques for getting the most out of your pastels. Using a mixture of charcoal, soft pastel, hard pastel and pastel pencil, Rebecca will work on simple pastel paper to show how you can create the drama of lights against darks, and capture shine and reflected colour. This is the still life you’ll be creating:

‘Three for the price of one’ on market day during our online, interactive ‘virtual’ week

Yes, it was market day yesterday in the walled mediaeval town of Fivizzano near the Watermill and our tutor, Mike Willdridge, chose as the subject for the day these two ladies gossiping in a quiet corner of the square.

But instead of getting just one demonstration picture to work along with, Mike gave a masterclass in how to capture the scene quickly in your sketchbook, using three different techniques, which you can see in the montage above. The sketch on the left uses soluble pen wash, while in the centre the medium is a permanent ink with a monotone watercolour wash. The picture on the right is permanent ink and colourful watercolour washes.

Mike is a great believer in using a sketchbook to capture fleeting moments, and yesterday’s session introduced us to not one, not two, but three different methods, for the price of one. The best bargain in the market!

Judging by the chatter during our online sessions our international group of more than 80 painters is having the time of its life, painting along every day with Mike.

Tomorrow is excursion day, so we are off to the quintessential Italian walled town of Lucca where we are going to paint in the spectacular piazza dell’ anfiteatro, its houses echoing the shape of the ancient Roman amphitheatre. (And, yes, before you reach for your editing pen, the Italians spell amphitheatre with an n and an f.) I believe there is a flower market on there. Here Mike’s demonstration painting, and I will bring you more highlights from our gallery tomorrow. Happy painting!

Of course, stimulating and inspiring (and value for money) as our online, interactive ‘virtual’ weeks are, they’re not quite the real thing. So now we seem to be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel as far as the coronavirus pandemic is concerned, why not celebrate your freedom by coming on one of Mike’s real painting weeks at the Watermill later this year. We’d love to welcome you here, at last. Here are the details:

We are delighted to report that already more than 40 people have already signed up for our latest online, interactive session next Tuesday. It is a special session with the renowned English watercolourist Tim Wilmot. It is special because you get to choose the subject of your painting! Before you start painting along with Tim there will be a short poll, in which participants choose which of the four views below they would like to paint. Then Tim will take you along step-by-step to help you create your masterpiece. Which one will you choose?

Which piazza will you choose to paint?

Out on location on our online, interactive, ‘virtual’ painting week: a charming white chapel in an ancient village

Yesterday our international group of more than 80 painters set out from the Watermill to the nearby village of Verrucola to paint the charming little white chapel, seen above in tutor Mike Willdridge’s demonstration picture. It was another day of pleasant painting and convivial camaraderie.

As usual, many of our guests sent their paintings to our online gallery, and again, I’ve been able to choose only a few of them to display here. As ever, my apologies to those I had to leave out. It is not a sign of artistic merit: I chose the paintings at random.

And again, I’ve made one of those short, fun Facebook slideshows, so you can see the paintings a little larger. You can view them by clicking here.

Tomorrow we are off to the market in the nearby mediaeval walled town of Fivizzano, but what caught Mike’s eye was these two ladies chatting away in a corner. I wonder if they’re talking about our ‘virtual’ visit? Here Mike’s demonstration painting, and I will bring you more highlights from our gallery tomorrow. Happy painting!

Warm and convivial painting in the Watermill courtyard on Day Two of our virtual week

Painting by Mike Willdridge, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.

Our guests are settling in nicely on their online, interactive ‘virtual’ week at the Watermill. Yesterday’s task for the group was to paint the warm and welcoming Watermill courtyard. That’s tutor Mike Willdridge’s demonstration picture above. As ever, as well as painting along with Mike, our 90+ guests, from many different countries, enjoyed the convivial company and friendly chats during yesterday’s session. And more than 50 of them have already submitted their paintings for our online gallery.

As usual, I’ve made a montage of a few of those pictures. I was only really able to choose eight of them, which I did entirely at random.

Also as usual, I have made a short Facebook slideshow of the pictures, so you can see them a little larger. You can view them by clicking here.

Tomorrow we will be setting off to our first location: the nearby castle and fortified village of Verrucola. Mike has chosen a delightful little white chapel on the outskirts of the village for today’s subject. Here is his demonstration painting — and I will bring you more highlights from our gallery tomorrow. Happy painting!

An even more compelling reason to visit the Watermill: Uffizi Gallery paintings are coming to the nearby town of Fivizzano (we hope!)

The Uffizi gallery. Picture: Arte.it

The Mayor of Fivizzano, the walled mediaeval town near the Watermill, where we go for an introductory dinner in the main square the first Saturday of our creative courses and to visit the weekly market on Tuesdays, has written to the director of the world-famous Uffizi gallery in Florence, saying “we are ready when you are.” (Or words to that effect.)

It is part of a new initiative by Eike Schmidt, the director of the most important Italian museum, called Uffizi diffuse. The aim is to unearth some of the hidden artworks, buried in the gallery’s basements and other storage areas, and display them in other venues throughout Tuscany.

Our mayor, Gianluigi Giannetti, has written to the Director, asking to participate in the project and we are now expecting a visit by managers from the Uffizi to inspect our local museum, in the old Augustinian monastery, just off the main piazza.

Not quite so grand: the entrance to the Fivizzano museum. Picture: ViaggiArt

I don’t think we are expecting Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, nor Leonardo’s Annunciation, but it will be fascinating to see what hidden Italian art treasures find the way to our sleepy and unspoiled market town. Yet another reason to come on one of our renowned creative courses. You can find out all about them by clicking here.

I wonder if she fancies change of scene? Picture: Uffizi gallery.

As we begin, at last, to get to grips with the coronavirus, we are confident that in a couple of months time we are going to be able to welcome guests again on our creative courses. Rest assured that, like you, we are monitoring the situation carefully and if we are still unable to run some of our earliest courses, we have contingency plans to postpone them until later in the year.

We already have many bookings for next year’s creative courses at the Watermill, in painting, creative writing, knitting and Italian language. Some 215 places are already taken out of a potential total of some 250/260. So now is the time

We would love to welcome you here and we have made a little slideshow to try to capture the atmosphere the Watermill. You can view it by clicking here. And below you will find details of all our painting, creative writing, knitting and Italian language weeks. Come and join us: it will be a wonderful way of celebrating a new beginning.

We’ve arrived! Day One of an exhilarating virtual week at the Watermill

Painting by Mike Willdridge, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.

More than 90 guests arrived yesterday for the start of our latest online, interactive ‘virtual’ week at the Watermill, in which they will spend two or three hours each day painting scenes from the Watermill and its beautiful surroundings in rural Tuscany with our tutor Mike Willdridge.

On Day One they arrived at Pisa and no sooner had their feet touched the ground than Mike had them painting a vibrant street scene in the city, before they set off for the Watermill. That’s Mike’s demonstration picture above.

Our guests found the experience exhilarating, if a little speedy, but bringing a sense of satisfaction as well as the camaraderie of painting along with other like-minded people. As one of our guests said: “That was wonderful, hard work, but wonderful.” Another said: “It’s life-saving for such a troublesome time.”

As usual, I’ve made a montage of a few of the pictures that our guests sent in to our online gallery. Our thanks to all who did so, and my apologies to those I had to leave out: I chose the pictures purely at random, so if I missed you today, please don’t take it personally!

Also as usual, I have made a short Facebook slideshow of the pictures, so you can see them a little larger. You can view them by clicking here.

Tomorrow we will have all settled in at the Watermill and we going to be painting around the courtyard. Here’s Mike’s demonstration picture of the warm and welcoming scene. I will show you what our guests made of it in tomorrow’s blog. Happy painting.
