Doodle your way to looser watercolours, says Doranne

Painting by Doranne Alden, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.Doranne Alden, our lovely watercolour tutor, who is joining us again this May (more details below) has just sent me these three colourful paintings she calls ‘doodles’. That’s ‘doodle 1’ above, while below is ‘doodle 2’Painting by Doranne Alden, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.

Doranne says: “Sketching in watercolour is a great way to learn about handling watercolour loosely. It can be quick and fun especially if you work on small doodles as I have done in these three paintings. It is also perfect practice for getting to know your palette of colours. Of course, your subject can be anything around you, as it is not what you paint but the way you paint it, that makes your work so much more appealing.” Here’s ‘doodle 3’Painting by Doranne Alden, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.

And this a Doranne Alden sketch of a guest painting beside the river Rosaro, which flows beside the Watermill. I reckon this captures the true essence of Watermill painting holidays:Painting by Doranne Alden, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.

Doranne Alden is a professional artist, art teacher and graphic designer who particularly loves painting in watercolour. She now lives in Malta, but also worked for several years in Germany. Doranne is also a dedicated teacher, who has led many classes and workshops. She loves sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm, inspiring her students to produce their best work — and she’s happy to teach beginners as well as more experienced painters. We already have nine people booked into Doranne’s course here, so we have room for only two or three more.
