NOW is the time to start writing your life story says Jo Parfitt

Here are some positive tips to get you started.

Write as soon as you can. Jo says: “They say you need to write ‘while you are bleeding’, so if it is at all possible, start writing while you feel the emotions strongly. The more emotional you feel while you write, the more effective your writing will be. You can polish it up later, but please don’t wait until your past is well and truly behind you before putting pen to paper.”

Jo says: “Don’t tell us everything that happened. No, a memoir needs to include only stories that ‘need’ to be included. Sadly, you have to miss out a lot of material.”

Think about the present tense. Jo says: “You don’t have to write in the past tense because, well, it happened in the past. No, if you read other memoirs you will notice that many authors write in the present tense, which makes the story more immediate and compelling.”
