Don’t always do what your yoga teacher says! Listen to your body says Amy

The Watermill at Posara for painting, knitting, creative writing, Italian language and yoga holidays/vacations/retreats, Tuscany, Italy. Our enthusiastic and inspiring yoga teacher Amy Rogg has just sent us this simple, but vitally important, yoga tip: don’t always do as you are told!

Amy and her colleague Joanne Brohmer are running a wonderful yoga retreat at the Watermill this Summer. So listen to your body and come and join us for beautiful Tuscany, amazing food and restorative yoga. Details of the retreat below. First, here’s Amy’s tip:

When we go to a yoga class there is often an assumption that we must do exactly what the teacher says or else we are not doing it ‘right’. This is one of the greatest myths of all. We have been conditioned to reach outside ourselves for answers about ‘right and wrong’ or to approach our bodies in a very intellectual/dualistic fashion.”

Yet our ability to ‘feel’ raw energy and our intuitive ‘gut response’ are often overwhelmed by our thinking minds, which try to judge, identify, analyse, and compartmentalize our experience. Our body’s connection to our feelings and sensations, our body can give us vital answers to what is right and wrong for us, but we must learn to listen.

“We must slow down, find patience, and breathe into the quiet spaces, trading in control for surrender. Listening is a form of surrender, of ‘receiving’ our life rather than trying to manipulate it for perceived outcome. When we listen to the body, we will hear its wisdom, discomfort, intensity, tenderness, and its intuitive response to life.”

Amy concludes: “So next time you’re in a yoga class ask yourself, what am I feeling? Does this feel good in my body? Does this pose feel like a ‘no’ right now? Is my hip saying ‘yes’? Listening deeply to your body’s innate intelligence, instead of what the mind or outside world has to say, will be the most empowering thing you can do for yourself!”
