Find out why William returns to the Watermill again and again – and again!

The Watermill at Posara for painting, knitting, creative writing and Italian language holidays/vacations/workshops, Tuscany, Italy. This man deep in concentration on his painting is William Shand, a retired eminent surgeon, an English gentleman and a true friend to the Watermill. He has been on painting courses with us no fewer than 15 times and this week he is with Sandra Strohschein. We must be doing something he likes. And we love his unfailing enthusiasm and impeccable courtesy.

Not only that, he shares a passion with me for the poems of Hilaire Belloc and, suitably prompted, we can be prevailed upon to recite after dinner some of the master’s witty and amusing poems, which are old-fashioned in having both meter and rhyme.

I have a slightly unusual request. Please would you pass on my very best wishes to Mr Shand, He operated on me 25 years ago and I am delighted to read that he is enjoying retirement to the full. As an English graduate, I wish I had known about his appreciation of Hilaire Belloc at the time, as he is a writer I much admire too!
If it is not too much of an intrusion, please convey my eternal gratitude for his skill. I have been essentially disease free from Crohn’s since the day he operated, which is rare indeed. I am sure this is largely due to him and his”embroidery” work of stitches has served me well.
I hope you all have a very happy time in June.
    With best wishes, Katharine

    • Dear Katherine
What an unusual, charming and uplifting comment. I will pass it onto William Shand and I guess he might be in touch with you. I am so glad he was able to help you so much. With best wishes Bill Breckon

Sorry this message is nothing about painting. However, I need to contact William Shand urgently about my cousin Clare Cooper. I am Sally Eden daughter of Jean, sister of Eileen Shand.

    • Dear Sally
I have passed on this message, with your email address, to William. I hope everything turns out okay. With best wishes Bill Breckon the Watermill at Posara,
