Can you forget all the roses that were ever painted and make a picture of ours?

, if you came one of our world-famous painting holidays at the Watermill. When I put together our recent blog on the ‘holiday pictures’ of famous painters I was struck by a quotation from one of the artists, Henri Matisse, who painted the picture above in 1925. It’s called Safrano Roses at the Window and Matisse commented: “There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted.”

I feel rather the same way about Venice and that picture we also featured, by Edouard Manet of gondolas on the grand Canal: can we ever see Venice differently, and it differently, remembering all the great pictures by masters from Canaletto to Turner and beyond?

But, returning to roses, we have wonderful roses on the pergola in the Watermill walled garden and several of our painting tutors and students have made pictures of them over the years. They also painted pictures of roses in their own locations and studios. Here are some, by Sandra Strohschein:Painting by Sandra Strohschein, a tutor at The Watermill at Posara painting holidays, Tuscany Italy.

And here’s a fine painting by our new Australian tutor, Jude Scott. The Watermill at Posara for painting, creative writing, knitting, and Italian language holidays/vacations/workshops, Tuscany, Italy.

And a superb pastel by Nel Whatmore. The Watermill at Posara for painting, creative writing, knitting, and Italian language holidays/vacations/workshops, Tuscany, Italy.

The best time to enjoy our roses will be in June and July and we still have spaces on the courses of Mike Willdridge and Sue Ford in that period if you’d like to try your hand at capturing them. Here is our rose pergola in full bloom:The Watermill at Posara for painting, knitting, creative writing, Italian language, yoga holidays/vacations, Tuscany, Italy.

We can’t promise you a plethora of roses later in the year, but there will still be plenty of colourful flowers in the gardens and grounds for you to capture with your brush. Here’s the latest list of painting weeks where we still have some places.
