Our Facebook tour of Watermill bedrooms continues today with the Ghirlandaio: Domenico Ghirlandaio was a late 15th century Florentine Renaissance painter, famous for his frescoes. Those in the Sassetti Chapel of the Santa Trinità church in Florence, with scenes from the life of St. Francis, are a knockout. I particularly like the miracle of the Resurrection of the Boy, below, with its wondrous depictions of Florentine citizens and daily life.

In the refectory of the monastery connected to the Ognissanti church nearby, you can see another Ghirlandaio masterpiece, a Last Supper depicting the moment Jesus tells the disciples that one of them will betray Him. At the request of the monks, Ghirlandaio also painted realistic plants, fruits and birds in the alcoves behind: all have religious symbolism.

The Watermill’s Ghirlandaio bedroom is in the carefully restored 17th century mill, with exposed wooden ceiling beams, period features and views over the mill cascades and down the river. *I have made another of those fun 30-second Facebook slide shows, which you can see by clicking here.
